We made it through Thanksgiving and now we’re gearing up for Christmas! It’s baking season again, and there’s nothing like a delicious homemade cake to bring on the Christmas cheer. But baking from scratch can be a bit of a hassle, right? That’s where box cake comes in handy!
I have learned so many tips and tricks over the years, and it would be my utmost pleasure to teach you how to save time and energy and make a Box Cake Taste Homemade.
The Best Treat Ever
As a little girl, my box cake mix journey started with a chocolate box cake mix I made all by myself. Back then, I added a miracle whip to help make it moist.
I have always loved experimenting with cooking. My sisters absolutely loved it! My mother always baked from scratch, and that is how I learned to bake as well.
An Irresistible Recipe
Are you short on time but craving a delicious treat to satisfy that sweet tooth? Not exactly a baking expert, yet still eager to indulge in sugary goodness? Fret not! You can easily make a box cake mix taste homemade. The best part is? No one will ever suspect a thing. It will be our little secret!
This fun and delicious treat will please both children and parents. Make this cake a Funfetti by adding sprinkles with your little ones on top of the cake. Kids would love to get involved; not only they will feel productive, but also they would have plenty of fun whisking all the ingredients and keeping their little hands busy.

Useful Tips
As I started to bake on my own, I learned how to make a box cake that tastes amazing! I took the Wilton baking classes at Hobby Lobby, and the teacher gave me so many tips, and over the years I have added my own.
- Using extra egg, buttermilk instead of water, flour, extract flavoring, sour cream, miracle whip, butter instead of oil, and homemade frosting or glaze, pudding or Jell-o, baking chips, nuts, or sprinkles make your cake mix box taste homemade.
- This cake mix can be used to make yellow cake mix, chocolate cake mix, white cake mix, and cupcakes.
- Using egg whites would result in a lighter cake.
- To double the layers, you can simply double the ingredients.
- If you have to use water, then use hot water instead of tap.
- Soak your cake with a flavored mixture by poking holes and letting it soak.
- To get the best result, make sure that the baking powder and baking soda are fresh and new. These ingredients might lose their effectiveness with time.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Adding in the extra egg yolk will give you a yellow cake, whereas adding an extra egg white will give you a white cake.
You can add non-dairy products such as coffee for the chocolate cake, which will allow the chocolate flavor to pop. Also, a dash of orange juice goes wonderfully with vanilla and yellow cake. Cola can be a great replacement for water.
Yes, cover the cake in plastic wrap for up to one week.
Put the frosting in a freezer for one hour. After it solidifies, cover the frosting tightly in plastic wrap. It can be stored for up to 2 months.
What Would You Need?
Extra Eggs: In most of my recipes, I use extra eggs (particularly 4 eggs). This would level your cake up to a whole new level.
Buttermilk: With its extra thick texture, Buttermilk becomes the perfect secret ingredient to this delicious cake mix box. A game changer indeed!
Flour: It has an important role in forming the structure of the cake. Almond flour, Chickpea flour, Rice flour, and Buckwheat flour make excellent flour alternatives.
Extract Flavor: Vanilla or any other type of flavoring extract is important to enhance the overall flavor.
Sour Cream: It makes the cake thicker and adds moisture and a creamy texture to it. You can replace sour cream with mayo, yogurt, or a cup of whole milk mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice.
Miracle Whip: Despite it being made of simple ingredients, Miracle Whip adds so much moisture and richness to the cake mix. It is important to note that Miracle Whip is a healthy version of mayo with fewer calories and fats.
Butter: It adds richness and gives your cake more flavor, tenderness, and moisture.
Homemade frosting or glaze: Homemade frosting gives your cake an artistic touch and a wonderful flavor. In addition, the glaze would make your cake look smooth and shiny.
Pudding or Jell-o: Pudding helps your cake be fresh for a longer period of time and gives it a homemade flavor; whereas Jell-o adds a fruity flavor and makes it colorful.
Baking chips, nuts, or sprinkles: Adding a handful of goodness would surely surprise you.
Easy Steps to Prep
Follow the steps on the back of the box. Just keep in mind to do the following:
First, use 4 eggs.
Second, replace water with buttermilk (same amount as mentioned on the box).
Third, use butter instead of oil (double the amount).
Preheat the oven to 350F.
Next, whisk the dry ingredients together.
Then, mix all the other ingredients at medium speed first, then at low speed.
Later, bake for 40 minutes. Baking might vary according to pan size and oven type.
Insert a wooden skewer in the center, if it comes out clean, then the cake is fully baked.
Finally, let it cool down before frosting the cake or layering it.
Serve and Enjoy!
