Every year when Juneteenth arrives, I find myself reflecting on more than just a holiday. I think about freedom, faith, and the generations who came before me. I think about Juneteenth foods, traditions, and family!
Juneteenth is a time to celebrate African American history and culture, but it’s also a reminder to preserve and share our family stories. For me, it brings back thoughts of my ancestors, William and Martha, who started our family legacy in Faunsdale, Alabama, located in Marengo County.
William and Martha were married in 1914, and because of their courage, determination, and faith, generations of our family have continued to grow and thrive. Their story is part of my story.
As a food blogger, cookbook author, and proud Alabama farm supporter, I often think about how traditions can be passed down through something as simple as a meal shared around a table.
One tradition that connects me to my family roots is gardening. My great-grandmother loved gardening, and today I find joy in supporting Alabama farmers and sharing fresh, homemade recipes with my readers. In many ways, I feel like I am carrying on a tradition she started generations ago.
Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is worth celebrating and that every family has a story worth telling.

What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19th and commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday and is celebrated across the United States through:
- Family reunions
- Community gatherings
- Educational events
- Music and cultural celebrations
- Storytelling
- Traditional foods
Food has always played an important role in Juneteenth celebrations because meals bring people together and help preserve family traditions.
Why Are Red Foods Important for Juneteenth?
One of the most recognizable Juneteenth food traditions is the use of red foods and drinks.
The color red symbolizes:
- Strength
- Resilience
- Sacrifice
- Courage
- The bloodshed endured by enslaved ancestors
Red foods have roots in West African culinary traditions and have become an important part of Juneteenth celebrations.
Popular red foods include:
- Strawberry Cake
- Red Velvet Cake
- Watermelon
- Strawberries
- Red Punch
Many families serve at least one red food or beverage as part of their Juneteenth meal.
Traditional Juneteenth Foods
While menus vary by family and region, several dishes commonly appear on Juneteenth tables.
Barbecue
Barbecue is often the centerpiece of many Juneteenth gatherings. Whether it’s ribs, chicken, pulled pork, or smoked turkey, barbecue represents community and fellowship.
Baked Beans
A cookout favorite that pairs perfectly with grilled meats and family gatherings.
Collard Greens
Greens have long been a staple in Southern cooking and remain a favorite side dish during Juneteenth celebrations.
Cornbread
Cornbread is a Southern classic that complements many traditional Juneteenth meals.
Macaroni and Cheese
Creamy, comforting, and always a crowd favorite.
Sweet Potato Pie
A beloved dessert that connects many families to generations of home cooks who came before them.
Red Velvet Cake
This vibrant red dessert has become one of the most iconic Juneteenth treats.
The Importance of Family Storytelling
One of my favorite Juneteenth traditions is simply sharing stories.
As families gather around the table, stories are often shared about grandparents, great-grandparents, and ancestors whose sacrifices made future opportunities possible.
When I think about William and Martha beginning our family story in Faunsdale, Alabama in 1914, I am reminded that family history deserves to be preserved.
Whether your family history is written down or passed along through conversation, Juneteenth is the perfect time to ask questions, gather photographs, and record family memories.
Consider asking relatives:
- Where did our family come from?
- What recipes have been passed down?
- What traditions did our grandparents celebrate?
- What lessons should future generations remember?
These stories become part of our legacy.
How Food Connects Us to Our Ancestors
Food has a unique way of connecting generations.
A favorite recipe can remind us of a grandmother’s kitchen. A garden can remind us of the lessons learned from previous generations.
As someone who loves supporting Alabama farmers and creating recipes for KMarie Kitchen, I often think about my great-grandmother’s love of gardening.
The vegetables she grew and the meals she prepared helped nourish her family. Today, supporting local farms and sharing recipes allows me to honor those traditions while creating new memories for future generations.
